CNDH participates in a webinar on the role of NHRIs in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic

The National Human Rights Council (CNDH) took part on May 26, 2020, in a webinar on the role of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Several NHRIs participated in this webinar, including the CNDH which was a panelist alongside NHRIs from South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Egypt.

Organized by the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI), this webinar aims at mobilizing NHRIs to share good practices developed by some of them on this pandemic and acquire additional knowledge on how to counter it.

This webinar focused on how to improve the role of NHRIs in promoting a human rights-based approach in measures used to hinder the spread of COVID-19 and to promote lifelong peer learning within NHRIs (sharing of information, experiences, and challenges), in the current context of COVID-19.

Stakeholders addressed the impact of COVID19 on the work of NHRIs and how they adapt to the situation (experiences and challenges). They also identified subjects and thematic that will be discussed by the CNDH during the next NANHRI webinars.

This webinar has thus enabled NHRIs to strengthen their role by contributing to efforts to implement effective measures to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

On this occasion, the CNDH shared its experience related to actions taken as part of its contribution to fighting against Covid-19, mainly those relating to monitoring, advocacy, awareness-raising, and protection of the rights of vulnerable groups (people with disabilities, prisoners, migrants, etc.).

Various cooperation actions with national and international actors were also addressed by the CNDH.

Other actions were highlighted, particularly the establishment of a special Covid-19 solidarity fund.
