CNDH- UNFPA partnership agreement to eliminate child marriage and promote women's rights to sexual and reproductive health

Rabat, April 29, 2020
Mrs. Amina Bouayach, President of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) and Mr. Luis Mora, Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), signed a partnership agreement for the period 2020-2021 to promote the rights of women and girls, including the rights to sexual and reproductive health in Morocco.

As part of this partnership agreement, the two parties will collaborate to strengthen advocacy to counter child marriage, promote the rights to sexual and reproductive health, and enhance the implementation of the recommendations of international instruments in this field.
This collaboration will strengthen the contribution of both parties to eliminate child marriage. It aims to enable them to realize their full potential and optimize their participation in human development and wealth creation.

This partnership is based on the results of the CNDH campaign: “Marriage of minors: Abolish the Exception ... Restore the Norm” aiming at mobilizing all stakeholders, in different regions of Morocco, on a community charter to eliminate the practice of child marriage.

The CNDH campaign responds to the measures of the National Action Plan on Democracy and Human Rights, which calls for further social dialogue to reform article 20 of the Family Code. This campaign was accomplished by the organization of a series of events aiming to raise awareness on issues related to abolishing child marriage at the regional and national levels.

This partnership reinforces the CNDH cooperation with the United Nations System for development in Morocco. It aims to develop clear and complete information and make it available to all actors.

This information includes normative, constitutional, legal, and national public policy elements related to sexual and reproductive health rights. This collaboration is also a question of strengthening the appropriation of international mechanisms by civil society actors to improve the situation of human rights in general and the rights to sexual and reproductive health in particular.
UNFPA supports 150 countries, including Morocco, in collecting demographic data, understanding their trends, and developing policies to ensure sustainable and inclusive development.

UNFPA is also the UN lead agency for sexual and reproductive health issues, including family planning and maternal health care. It is one of the main UN bodies responsible for advancing gender equality and countering gender-based violence. UNFPA collaborates also with young people to help them participate in decisions that affect them and to strengthen their capacity to advance fundamental rights and development issues.
