World Congress against the Death Penalty: The importance of NHRIs to the abolitionist cause
President of the National Human Rights Council, Mr. Driss El Yazami, took part on Thursday 23rd June in a plenary on the importance of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) to the abolitionist cause, as part of the 6th World Congress against the Death Penalty (Oslo, 21-23 June 2016).
The Plenary exchanged on “how to work with the national human rights institutions (NHRIs) and rally them to the abolitionist cause”. The President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, the Chairperson of the Malawi Human Rights Commission, the Head of Office of Avocats Sans Frontières Nigeria, and a former Director of the National Human Rights Commission of India, were also members of the panel.
The World Congress against the Death Penalty is a key event that brings together abolitionist actors from all over the world. The Opening session of the event was attended by UN high-level officials and State representatives, including ministers of justice from Belgium, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, France, Italy, Lebanon, Malaysia, Norway, Palestine, the Republic of Central Africa, Spain, and Switzerland.
The 6th Congress was held by the ECPM (Together against the Death Penalty), in partnership with the World Coalition against the Death Penalty. It ended with a closing ceremony during which the Final Declaration was adopted by all participants.
